The process of transferring products or materials from one mode of transportation to another, particularly between railcars and trucks. Transloading allows a shipper or receiver to use rail transportation even when the origin or destination does not have direct rail access.
Depending on the commodity, transloading may involve equipment such as forklifts, conveyors, loaders, cranes or pumps.
