Historic Flood Response Supports Rapid Railcar Recovery in West Virginia

In early 2025, a severe flooding event impacted a rail yard in southwestern West Virginia, prompting a coordinated effort to assess affected railcars and support their return to service as quickly as possible.

Following the event, railroad employees worked alongside R. J. Corman teams to coordinate recovery activities and complete necessary repairs. Given the scope of the work and the number of cars involved, a significant response was required. R. J. Corman mobilized within days, providing support seven days a week to address the mechanical impacts of the flooding.

The project required close collaboration between R. J. Corman’s emergency and mechanical teams, who worked together to perform extensive wheel and brake system repairs. The work was completed directly in the yard and coordinated around ongoing rail operations. Crews replaced affected components, restored brake systems, cleaned and tested air systems, and ensured each car met safety and operational requirements before being returned to service.

Winter conditions, including snow, freezing temperatures, and unstable ground caused by lingering floodwater and mud, added complexity to the recovery effort. Limited working space in certain areas of the yard and the need to coordinate repairs in an active rail environment required careful planning and continuous communication with the railroad. In addition to performing repairs, R. J. Corman worked with railroad personnel to coordinate work sequencing across multiple tracks and contractors to maintain efficiency and prioritize cars critical to the railroad’s operation.

Accurate documentation and timely reporting were also essential components of the project. Repair details were recorded daily and submitted to support timely processing and system updates throughout the recovery effort.

Through sustained effort, coordination and adaptability, railroad employees and R. J. Corman teams supported the safe return of affected railcars to service. The project demonstrates R. J. Corman’s ability to provide specialized mechanical and emergency services in support of a coordinated recovery effort under demanding conditions.
